Viola E. Kay, 89, of Rapid River (Stonington), passed away early Thursday morning, June 11, 2020, at OSF St. Francis Hospital in Escanaba. She was born on Dec. 27, 1930, in Gladstone, the daughter of George and Marvel (LaBumbard) Johns. Viola was raised and attended school in Cornell. The former Viola Johns married Herman R. Kay on Jan. 16, 1952, at the Delta County Courthouse in Escanaba and he preceded her in death on Feb. 26, 2018. Together, the couple shared 66 years of marriage and raised two children, Catherine and Terry. Viola took great pride in being a homemaker, caring for her husband and children. She and Herman were longtime members of Trinity Lutheran Church in Stonington. Viola enjoyed crocheting, cooking, and making big meals for the family. She was a social bug and was willing to help wherever needed.
Viola E. Kay is survived by her children, Catherine Fletcher of Stonington, and Terry (Brenda) Kay of Schaffer; five grandchildren, Cheryl, Scott, Melissa, Lance, and Dustin; 11 great-grandchildren; nephews, Clarence (Esther) Cadreau, and Calvin Cadreau; and niece, Carol Cadreau.
In addition to her parents and husband, Viola was preceded in death by her siblings, Stella Cadreau, Frank (Lila) Johns, LeRoy Johns, and George Johns; and brother-in-law, Clarence “Bud” Cadreau.
Graveside services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, July 11, at Lakewood Cemetery in Stonington with Rev. Diane Srutowski officiating. Burial will follow in Lakewood Cemetery.
