Susan Ostanek Obituary

Susan (Susie) Lee Ostanek of Trenary, Michigan, passed peacefully on March 25, 2025, surrounded by her family in the comfort of her daughter’s home in Escanaba, MI.

Susie was born to Joe and Sylvia (Ollila) Ostanek in Marquette, MI, on May 19, 1953 and grew up in Trenary, the second oldest of five girls. She spent her early years working on the family farm, honing her talents as a seamstress and cook, and active in school activities. At a young age Susie became determined to be the best at every activity she pursued, and that determination never waned. From practicing archery in her youth until her fingers bled; hand-stitching clothing so beautifully, she was accused of using a machine when she entered it in the county fair (her mom straightened out the judge and Susie got her ribbon); to building and maintaining a beautiful home and yard. When Susie put her mind to something, there was not much that could stop her.

Susie loved people and was a wonderful caregiver. In addition to raising her four children and being an active partner in family businesses, she was a great help to her parents in their later years.  When grandchildren came along, Susie was excited to step into the role of grandma. She loved each of her grandchildren with all her heart. One of the ways Susie expressed her love was through her cooking and baking talents. Many have enjoyed her main dishes (which often included a spicy twist) and sweets at family holiday and birthday celebrations or simply at morning coffee time or dinner.  Her Dad, Joe, especially enjoyed morning coffee time and dinner with Susie in his later years. Susie worked a variety of jobs throughout her life but in more recent years, she had a fulfilling career as a CNA at the Tendercare Health Facility in Munising, MI.  Susie had a compassionate way with older individuals – kind, caring and loving.  When Susie wasn't taking care of others, she could be found crocheting and crafting, reading a good book, and perusing the treasures at thrift stores. She found it hard to pass up a good deal and would often share her finds with friends and family.

Susie is survived by her children, Craig Silta, Renee (Scott Honkonen) Silta, Joseph (Melissa) Silta, and Joshua (Ashley) Silta; grandchildren Claire, Jocelyn, Avery, Ashton, Summer, and Skylar; sisters Lori (Pete Maki) Ostanek-Maki and Julie (Sam) Trotter; numerous nieces, nephews and dear friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents Joe and Sylvia Ostanek; her sister, brother-in-law and niece, Marcia and Ron Begovac and their daughter, Leslie; and her sister, Jill Cutting.

Susie’s family would like to thank her former spouse Pete Pena for being there for her, no matter what. They shared many important years with one another and their time together will remain a cherished part of her story. They would also like to thank OSF Hospice for their wonderful care and compassion.

As she wished, Susie’s family will have a private celebration of her life.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing to offer an expression of sympathy are encouraged to make a memorial contribution to a charity of their choice.
