Steven Charles Johnson went to eternal rest on April 30, 2023. He was born on August 7, 1947 to Marvin and Joyce Johnson of Escanaba. They preceded him in death. He was the oldest of four sons. Steve graduated from Escanaba High School in 1965 and later attended Bay College and Northern Michigan University. He began his lifelong career at Mead Paper in March 1968 and continued until his retirement in June 2008.
Steve married his loving wife Gloria, of 52 years, on September 11, 1971. They were blessed with two daughters, Wendy Joy (Charles) Thomas and Sarah Fay Malik.
Steve’s passion was the game of golf - attending PGA tournaments and teaching his grandchildren the game. He was a highly skilled and gifted woodworker. His daughters’ homes are blessed with many of his furniture pieces and his craftmanship. Steve and Gloria loved to travel and spent countless hours together in their flower gardens. Spending time with family was one of his favorite pastimes.
Steve was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Mead Retiree Club, and the Escanaba Country Club. He will be deeply missed by all of those who knew and loved him.
Steve is survived by his beloved wife, Gloria Johnson of Wells; his adoring daughters, Wendy Thomas of Midland, MI and Sarah Malik of Whitefish Bay, WI; his son-in-law Charles Thomas; his grandsons, Solomon Charles Thomas (junior at Northern Michigan University) and Drew Steven Malik (freshman at Whitefish Bay High School), and his granddaughter, Sadie Glorianna Thomas (freshman at Michigan State University). Steve is also survived by his brother, James (Jeanne) Johnson; as well as special friends, Dick and Judi LaCosse, all of Escanaba.
Visitation will be held from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., Friday, May 5, 2023 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Escanaba. Funeral services celebrating the life of Steve will follow at 5:00 p.m., Friday, with Rev. Mike Markwell officiating. A luncheon will be served at the conclusion of the services in the church fellowship hall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Steve’s name to Immanuel Lutheran Church of Escanaba or the Beacon House of Marquette.
