Shirley Jean Young, age 87, of Gladstone, passed away Wednesday morning, October 27, 2021 at Lakeview Assisted Living in Gladstone due to complications of PAD. Jean was born on July 26, 1934 to Hilda and Wilmer Beckstrom. She was raised in Escanaba, MI and graduated from Escanaba High School in 1952. Jean married Lloyd M. Young on October 8, 1955 and together they moved to Chatham, MI where they raised their family. Upon Lloyd’s death in 2003, Jean moved to Gladstone to be closer to her children.
Jean was a thoughtful, kind and generous person. She was happiest when cooking and baking and sharing her baked goods with friends and neighbors. She had a positive outlook on life and enjoyed spending time with her family.
She is survived by two sisters, Lois (Tom) Wahtola of Worthington, OH and Sharon (Nick) Lung of Oregon, IL; children, Donna (Bruce) Flannery of Gladstone, MI, Carol Young of Cadillac, MI, Kathy Iliev of Juneau, AK, and John (Jeanine) Young of Green River, WY; grandchildren, Daniel (Miki) Flannery of Osaka, Japan, Kira (Tom) Mocon of Wheaton, IL, Ryan (Emily) Young of Boston, MA, and Alexander Iliev of Ft. Lauderdale, FL; as well as great-grandchildren, Annalise, Sebastian & Solenne Mocon of Wheaton, IL and Liam Young of Boston, MA.
In addition to her husband and parents, Jean was preceded in death by a twin sister, Joan Beverly Beckstrom; and son-in-law, Alex Iliev.
In accordance with Jean’s wishes, a private memorial service will be held at a later date.
