Robert George McDonald, age 86, of Manistique, Michigan, passed away on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, at Schoolcraft Medical Facility in Manistique. He was born on September 15, 1939, in Manistique.
Bob attended school in Shingleton and Munising. At the age of 17, he enlisted in the United States Army and served for five years, primarily in Germany, with a short time spent in Beirut, Lebanon. He was honorably discharged on January 23, 1963.
Bob married the former MaryAnn Boivin, and together they raised four children: Sheila Kay, Scott, Lynn, and Patrick. He worked in Milwaukee for several years before returning to the Seney area, where he worked in the woods, and later moved to Manistique.
On August 1, 1987, Bob married the former Barbara Messer of Manistique in the chapel at Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital.
Bob loved people and enjoyed visiting with family and friends. To him, no one was ever a stranger. He also loved dancing and spending time outdoors. In 2022, Bob’s children took him on a bucket-list trip to California to see the giant redwoods, a trip he greatly enjoyed.
Bob is survived by his wife, Barbara; his children, Sheila Kay, Scott, Lynn, Patrick, and Tanya; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held at 12:00 noon on Wednesday, April 29, 2026, at Wood Cemetery in Doyle Township, with Father Ben Paris officiating. Military honors will be provided by Schoolcraft County All Vets of Manistique. Burial will follow.
A celebration of Bob’s life will take place following the cemetery service at the V.F.W. Post in Manistique, with fellowship and a luncheon to be served.
