Paul Raymond Opferkuch, age 82, of Escanaba, passed away Thursday morning, December 31, 2020 at Unity Hospice in Green Bay, WI. He was born on June 10, 1938 in Racine, WI, the son of John and Margaret (Greis) Opferkuch. Paul was raised and attended school in Racine and was a 1956 graduate of Washington Park High School. He went on to further his education with the University of Wisconsin Extension Center in Racine, and transferred in 1958 to the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee where he received his BS in Political Science in 1960. From 1962 to 1963 Paul attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison and earned his MS in Political Science. Paul began his working career as a Claim’s Examiner with the Social Security Administration in Chicago, IL. He then was a General Manager and Corporate Secretary with Tax Researchers, Inc. in Milwaukee, WI for a few years before relocating to Escanaba. Paul was an Assistant Professor of Government at Bay de Noc Community College in Escanaba from 1969 until his retirement in 1994. During this time, he also served as a Chairman in the Social Science Division at Bay College. Paul married the former married the former Carmaleta Snow on January 7, 2013. Paul was very active throughout the community and performed with Players de Noc and the Escanaba City Band. He was a member of the American Federation of Musicians Local #663, the Michigan Republican Party, the Escanaba, Kiwanis Club (past president), the Escanaba Golden-K Kiwanis Club (past president), the Delta County Historical Society, and the Delta County Apportionment Commission. Paul was also very involved as a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Escanaba where he served as past council member. Paul loved to travel and visited all states of the Continental United States and nine of the ten Canadian Provinces. He also traveled extensively to Mexico and Jamaica.

Paul was preceded in death by his parents.
Visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. (EST), Thursday, January 7, 2021 at the Anderson Funeral Home in Escanaba. Funeral services celebrating the life of Paul will follow at 12:00 p.m. (EST), Thursday with Rev. Dennis Meyette officiating. Burial will take place in West Lawn Memorial Park in Racine, WI.
