Michael 'Suds' L. Sundstrom

Michael “Suds” Lowell Sundstrom, age 61, of Escanaba, passed away Sunday afternoon, November 4, 2018 at OSF St. Francis Hospital surrounded by family. He was born on June 21, 1957 in Escanaba, the son of Lowell and Ruth (Pawl) Sundstrom. Mike grew up in Escanaba and began working at Cloverland Paper in Escanaba during high school. He was a 1976 graduate of Escanaba High School and continued employment at Cloverland Paper in the sales department. Michael married the former Marina Phrosolisa “Phros” Chapekis on June 3 1989 at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Escanaba. The couple also honored Phros’ heritage and had a Greek wedding on October 21, 1989 at the Greek Orthodox Church in Marquette. Phros preceded Mike in death on March 20, 2016. Together, they shared 26 years of marriage and raised two sons, Alex and Nicholas. Mike was proud to be of Swedish descent, but he always stated that he was as much Greek as he was Swedish – that was very important to him. He loved being on the water and spending time on his boat. Mike also enjoyed being outdoors and hunting. He was a member of the Escanaba Yacht Club and served as the Vice Commodore for the power/cruise boats. Mike could always brighten anyone’s day and was loved by many people. His family meant the world to him and he was so proud of his two sons.

Michael L. Sundstrom is survived by sons, Alex Sundstrom of Escanaba, and Nicholas Sundstrom of Denver, CO; one brother, Fred (Doris) Sundstrom of Escanaba; sisters, Lin (Bob) Van Effen of Escanaba, and Sandy (George) Papich of Denton, TX; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and wife, Michael was preceded in death by his mother and father-in-law, Nicholas and Marina Chapekis; and brother-in-law, Nicholas Anthony Chapekis.

Visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., Wednesday, November 7, 2018 at the Anderson Funeral Home in Escanaba. Funeral services celebrating the life of Michael will follow at 4:00 p.m., Wednesday, in the Anderson Funeral Home Chapel with Father Mark Sietsema of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Lansing officiating. Burial will take place in Gardens of Rest Cemetery.
