Michael Ott Obituary

Michael Leon Ott, age 72, went to be with his Lord and Savior on December 24, 2023, at Bellin Memorial Hospital in Green Bay, Wisconsin, with his wife by his side. Michael was born on March 5, 1951, in Albion, Michigan, to Larry and Viva (O’Dell) Ott. His family moved to the Upper Peninsula when he was a boy, and settled in Gladstone, Michigan. He graduated from Gladstone Area High School in 1969, excelling in cross-country which was his sport of choice.

Michael married Theresa Joy (Schaut) on March 3, 1985, and together they raised their blended family of five children: Michael (Renee) Stenberg, Gina Hosking, Shannon (Kevin) Priebe, Christine Stenberg, and Michael (Pamela) Ott.

During his career Michael was an owner/operator, cross-country contractor, leased to Heim Trucking, Denmark, WI.   He and his wife had many opportunities to see the United States from the window of his “Big Rig” and visited many landmarks along the way. His children also were able to ride along with him in the summer and experience their Dad’s occupation first hand. Those were very enjoyable times for him. He also was instrumental in the design of the Delta County Courthouse and Webster School during his time as a draftsman for Arntzen Architects.

Michael was deep in his faith, and later when he retired, the highlights of his week included Bible study classes with his friends Keith and Ernie and attending Calvary Baptist Church on Sundays. He knew his years here on Earth were just a “vapor” in comparison to eternity. Michael’s life has left us a “vapor trail” in our hearts and he will be deeply missed by those that knew him or were very close to him.

His grandchildren will deeply feel his loss as he spent many, many hours with them fishing and camping. All of them from the youngest to the oldest were so special to him. He also enjoyed hunting up on 509 in his big old tent with his friend Jason Campbell, and many Thanksgiving meals up there with family.

In addition to his wife, Joy, and children, Michael is survived by his brother, Larry Ott, Fort Lauderdale, FL; sisters Cheryl Cox, Lake Geneva, WI; and Christine (Kenneth) Sandstrom, Montgomery, AL; in-laws, Leo Schaut, Mary Snyder, Dorothy Martin, Marina, Ellen, and Barbara Schaut  along with numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren and special friend Lou Gibson.

The funeral service will be celebrated Pastor Brian Swillum at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 6, 2024, at Calvary Baptist Church, 2000 11th Avenue N., Escanaba, MI 49829. Prior to the service, relatives and friends may call on the family during a time of visitation from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. Immediately following the service, you are cordially invited to join the family for a time of fellowship, food, and refreshments in the church hall. A graveside committal will take place on Monday at Gardens of Rest Memorial Park, Escanaba, MI.
