Marjorie Van Damme Obituary

Marjorie Elisabeth Van Damme, age 97, of 413 South 10th Street in Gladstone, passed away Sunday, February 28, 2021 at home surrounded by her loving family. She was born on November 16, 1923 in Hinsdale, Montana, the daughter of Louis and Marian (Hoste) Matthys. Marjorie graduated from Gladstone High School. The former Marjorie Matthys married George Van Damme on June 26, 1948 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Perkins and he preceded her in death on January 28, 1999. In the early 1950s, Marjorie and George purchased a farm in St. Nicholas where they had dairy cattle and raised potatoes until their retirement in 1985. They later moved to Gladstone. Marjorie was a former member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Perkins and a member of All Saints Catholic Church in Gladstone. She also was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post #540. Marjorie enjoyed baking, cooking, gardening, and loved painting. She was well known for her glazed donuts.  

Marjorie Elisabeth Van Damme is survived by her four sons, David (Terry) Van Damme of Ironwood, MI, Charles (Erica) Van Damme of Winnetka, IL, Roger (Karen) Van Damme of Rock, and Tom Van Damme of Rock; two daughters, Susan (Neil) Van Drese of Cornell, and Mary Van Damme (Alan Donley) of Kirkland, WA; 20 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandchild; sister, Angela Cafmeyer of Avilla, IN; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, Marjorie was preceded in death by her daughter, Janet; sister, Jane Matthys; and brother, Anthony Matthys.

Visitation will be held from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., Thursday March 4, 2021, at the family farm located at 2345 St. Nicholas 31st Road in Rock. Funeral services celebrating the life of Marge VanDamme will follow at 4 p.m. at the family farm with Father James Ziminski officiating. Burial will take place in the spring of the year at the St. Nicholas Cemetery.
