Maria J. Leach

Maria J. Leach, age 59, of Escanaba passed away at OSF- St. Francis Hospital in Escanaba. She was born October 22, 1964 in Escanaba and was the daughter of John and Judith (Geb) Lippens. Maria graduated from Escanaba High School in 1985. She married David Wendt on November 11, 1990 in Escanaba. Maria later married Robert Lee Leach in 2010 and he preceded her in death in 2013.  She was employed by the Department of Natural Resources, later working in the fast-food industry and then as a nurse’s aide in home health care until her retirement. Maria enjoyed Special Olympics, competing in bowling and swimming, going to the U.P. State Fair, and attending the stock car racing. She loved animals and enjoyed camping, fishing, and playing bingo. Maria was a member of the Salvation Army in Escanaba.

Maria is survived by sons, John Robert Wiegers of Muskegon, MI, Samuel David Wiegers of Muskego, MI; grandson Tavyn John Earl Wiegers of Muskegon, MI; sister Wendy Lippens of Pellston, MI; father John (Laurie) Lippens Ford River, MI; many step children and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her mother Judy Lippens and husband Bob, Maria was preceded in death by her aunt Janet Nelson.

Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Monday, May 20, 2024 at the Anderson Funeral Home in Escanaba. Funeral services celebrating the life of Maria Leach will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday at the Anderson Funeral Home Chapel with Captain Doug Winters officiating. A luncheon will be served following the funeral services in the Ludington Room located at the Anderson Funeral Home. Burial will take place in the Rapid River Cemetery.
