Malven Thomma Obituary

Malven L. Thomma, age 90, of Escanaba, passed away early Wednesday morning, October 21, 2020 at Christian Park Healthcare Center in Escanaba. He was born on August 9, 1930 in Escanaba, the son of Matthew and Marvel (Boyd) Thomma. Malven was raised and attended school in Escanaba where he was a 1948 graduate of Escanaba High School. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1949 and served his country until he was called home in 1950 when his dad was dying. Malven married the former Lois Ann Peterson in 1952 and together raised 5 children; Jack, Melanda, Jim, Scott, and Todd. He later married the former Carolyn Johnsen and shared many years of marriage. Malven was employed by Escanaba Paper Company for 43 ½ years as a machine tender in the #1 mill until his retirement in 1992. He has greatly enjoyed the past 28 years of retirement. Malven was a member of the Great Lakes Sports & Recreation Club, and a member of the Mead 25 Year Club. He enjoyed everything the outdoors had to offer – especially fishing, hunting, camping, and traveling. Malven was an avid Green Bay Packers fan and also enjoyed going to the Escanaba Civic Center.

Malven L. Thomma is survived by 5 children, Jack (Mary) Thomma of Soo Hill, Melinda (Mike) Broeders of Escanaba, Jim (Sandy) Thomma of Escanaba, Scott Thomma of Escanaba, and Todd (Beverly) Thomma of Suamico, WI; 12 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; 5 brothers, Joseph Thomma of Milwaukee, WI, Rodney (Annette) Thomma of Soo Hill, Virgil (Lucey) Thomma of Soo Hill, Vernard “Buck” (Linda) Thomma of Gwinn, MI, and Norman (Jeanette) Thomma of Gwinn, MI; sisters, Bernice Banaszynski of Pulaski, WI, Gail (James) Hart of Wilson, and Sherry Kohal of Hermansville; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Malven was preceded in death by grandson, James Thomma, Jr.; sisters, Shirley Deckatowski, and Delphine Caron; and brothers, Edward Thomma, and Matthew Thomma.

Military Honors will be conducted by the Delta County Veterans Council at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, October 24, 2020 at the Gardens of Rest Cemetery in Wells. Burial will take place following the services.
