Larry Andersen Obituary

Captain Larry Ray Andersen, age 86, a retired City of Detroit firefighter, passed away on Friday, May 1, 2026, at U.P. Health System–Marquette.

Larry was born on September 18, 1939, in Manistique, Michigan, to William and Nona (Hooper) Andersen. He graduated from Frank Cody High School in Detroit and went on to dedicate 30 years of service to the City of Detroit Fire Department, beginning on September 24, 1962, and retiring on June 29, 1992. On October 21, 1961, he married the love of his life, Judith Blum, at St. Martha’s Episcopal Church in Detroit. Together, they built a life centered on family and raised three children: Candace, Lynne, and Mark.

Following his retirement, Larry and Judy returned to the Upper Peninsula, a place that always held a special place in his heart. They purchased land on Schaawe Lake and, with the help of his fellow firefighters and lifelong friends, built their retirement home, true labor of love.

Larry was a devoted member of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Escanaba, where he handcrafted the cross still used during the Lenten season. He had a deep appreciation for the outdoors and found joy in nature, hunting, fishing and long wondering walks in the woods. One of his most cherished memories was a 50th anniversary trip to Glacier National Park, thoughtfully gifted by his children. Larry was known for his warm smile, quick wit, and unmistakable sense of humor. Proud of his roots, he was a true Yooper through and through.

He is survived by his wife, Judy; his daughters, Candace (Mark) Bando of Farmington Hills, MI, and Lynne (Rick) Gull of Mikado, MI; and his son, Mark (Michelle) Andersen of Twin Lakes, WI. He also leaves behind his cherished grandchildren: Jacob and Zachary Andersen, Andrew and Hazel Gull; his brother, Charlie Simons of Perrysburg, OH; his sister, Kathy Schoenmeyer of Carmel, IN; along with several nieces and nephews.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents, as well as his brother, Richard Andersen, and sister, Judy Bowling.

Visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 7, 2026, at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Escanaba. A funeral service celebrating Larry’s life will follow at 2:00 p.m., officiated by Bishop Rayford Ray and Rev. Meg Trimm.  A luncheon will be served in the church fellowship hall following the service. Burial will take place at the Rapid River Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church Outreach Fund or the Delta Animal Shelter.
