Keith John Mattson, age 85, of Rock (formerly of Escanaba), passed away Saturday, January 22, 2022 at his home. He was born on September 1, 1936 in Escanaba, the son of Fred and Mildred (Mickelson) Mattson. Keith was raised and attended school in Escanaba and was a 1955 graduate of Escanaba High School. He married the former Kathleen B. Randall on April 12, 1958 at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Wells and she preceded him in death on January 6, 2011. Together, the couple shared 52 years of marriage and raised 6 children. Keith was employed by Harnischfeger Corporation for 30 years as a welder and quality assurance manager until the plant closed in the early 1980s. He then worked for Lake Shore Systems, Inc. in Kingsford, MI as plant manager and quality assurance manager until his retirement in September of 1998. Keith was an avid outdoorsman and loved anything and everything that went along with spending time in the woods. He began hunting and trapping at the young age of 14 and continued his passion to this day going on many hunting and fishing trips. Keith also enjoyed working around his house and snow plowing in the wintertime. He was an amazing storyteller and would often capture his audience with his wonderful stories. Keith was a member of many outdoor clubs, including the Great Lakes Sports and Recreation Club in Escanaba where he enjoyed the fellowship with others who enjoyed his same passion. He also was a member and served as a Deacon and Elder at Lakeside Christian Church in Escanaba. Keith was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and friend to many who will be greatly missed.
Keith J. Mattson is survived by his children, Thomas (Jean) Mattson of Pahrump, NV, William (Jill) Mattson of Sussex, WI, Terri-Lynn (Charles) Thompson of Wilson, MI, Ingrid Mattson of West Allis, WI, and Kristian (Tammy) Mattson of Escanaba, MI; 20 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; 5 great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Beverly Person of Downers Grove, IL and Mickey (Fran) Bjorkquist of Escanaba, MI; brothers, Roger Mattson of New Lenox, IL and Steve Mattson of Escanaba, MI; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and wife, Keith was preceded in death by his son, Kevin Mattson; grandson, Curtis Thompson; and brother, Robert Mattson.
Visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., Thursday, January 27, 2022 at Lakeside Christian Church in Escanaba. Funeral services celebrating the life of Keith will follow at 12:00 p.m., Thursday, with Pastor Ryan Gilroy officiating.
