John Leroy Oberg, age 86, of Bark River, passed away Wednesday, August 4, 2021 at U.P. Health System-Marquette. He was born on February 9, 1935 in Shingleton, MI, the son of Leroy Robert and Clarabelle (Jordell) Oberg. John attended school in Manistique, MI where he graduated from high school. In 1954, John married Joan Louise Gierke. Together, the couple shared 61 years of marriage and raised 3 sons. John was employed by the Federal Government with the U.S. Geological Survey as a Hydrologic Technician. He was in charge of studying water resources within the water sheds of the Upper Peninsula until his retirement. He then was hired by the State of Florida performing the same duties as a Hydrologic Technician for the St. Johns River district and resided in the Orlando area for 10 years. John accepted a position with a Canadian consulting firm working for 5 years for the Government of Oman. Afterward, he relocated to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and lived near Cooks Lake outside Munising, before moving into the Cedar Hill Senior Apartments in Bark River 3 years ago.
John served in the Michigan National Guard for many years. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, hunting and fishing with his sons, reading, and his travels around the country and abroad.
John Oberg is survived by his two sons, Ron (Carol) Oberg of Gooseneck Lake, and Jim (Andrea Collins) Oberg of Gooseneck Lake; 4 grandchildren – Kristin Petrie, Thomas Oberg, Matthew Oberg, & Kayla Oberg; 6 great-grandchildren; and sister, Kathleen Collins of Dayton, FL.
In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his wife in 2015 and his son, Michael John Oberg in 2016.
