Jerome “Joe” E. Bernier, age 78, of Escanaba, passed away Thursday morning, March 18, 2021 at his home in Escanaba. He was born on November 16, 1942 in Escanaba, the son of Ernest and Margie (Sargent) Bernier. Joe was raised in Escanaba and was a 1961 graduate of Holy Name High School. Following graduation, Joe enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served his country until he was honorably discharged. While serving in the military, Joe married the former Sandy Peters on October 19, 1963 in Los Angeles, CA. Together, the couple shared 57 years of marriage. Joe began his working career at Elmer’s Super Value in Escanaba which later was renamed to Elmer’s County Market. He worked as the manager of the bakery for 45 years until his retirement in 2004. Joe enjoyed anything to do with the outdoors – especially fishing, hunting, and camping. He also loved going to camp on Bergman Road in LaBranche where he fed the deer and the birds. Joe enjoyed traveling and going to Arizona. He was a member of the Amvets Post 123 in Escanaba.
Jerome E. Bernier is survived by his wife, Sandy Bernier of Escanaba; son, David (Doreen) Bernier of Appleton, WI; daughter, Sherri (Doug) Mylander of Greer, SC; 4 grandchildren, Brooke Bernier, Nicholas (Kayla) Mylander, Nathan (Mollie) Mylander, and Gabrielle Mylander; siblings, James (Jane) Bernier of Escanaba, Joseph (Cheryl) Bernier of Escanaba, Mary (Mike) Perry of Escanaba, and Ann (Chris) Londo of Escanaba; and several nieces and nephews.
Jerome was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Margie Bernier.
Memorial services celebrating the life of Joe are being planned for a later date. Burial will take place in Lakeview Cemetery.
