Janet Norczyk

Janet Norczyk, age 93, of Escanaba, passed away Friday, September 16, 2022, at Christian Park Village in Escanaba. Janet was born on February 27, 1929, in Ontonogan, to George and Tynne Irene (Helander) Fournier. Her father died less than four months later from an electrical accident at work. Janet and her mother then lived with Irene’s parents and brothers in Woodspur until Irene married Steve Norczyk in November 1930, and Steve then adopted Janet.

Janet was an excellent student; she skipped a grade and was the ninth-grade class president. In 1946, she graduated from Ontonagon High School and was awarded a scholarship to William Jennings Bryan University in Tennessee, given to the “highest ranking senior.” She attended there, returned to Ontonagon, and then accepted a job with Hiawathaland Independent Missions in Escanaba, where she worked for many years. She ended her career at Pioneer Kitchens in Escanaba, where she managed the financials.

Janet loved spending time with her best friends Mary McGrath and Florence “Flossie” Paquette. The three were inseparable and knew how to enjoy each day's moments. Janet was quick-witted, kind, and generous with her time and talents. 

She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Escanaba, where she served in the music and teaching ministries. She made a significant impact in the lives of those she taught and was fondly remembered as a Sunday School teacher. In 2008 she moved to the Christian Park Village, where she resided until her passing on September 16, 2022.

She is survived by her nephew, Tim Norczyk; and many family members and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, James; and her nephew, Anthony.

Visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., Friday, September 23, 2022, at the Anderson Funeral Home in Escanaba. Funeral services celebrating the life of Janet will follow at 12:00 p.m., Friday, in the Anderson Funeral Home Chapel, with Pastor Brian Swillum officiating. A luncheon will be served at the conclusion of the services in the Anderson Funeral Home Reception Room. Burial will take place in the Riverside Cemetery in Ontonagon, MI.
