Gerald Carter, age 72, of Escanaba passed away at his home on Tuesday August 29, 2023 with his loving family by his side after a courageous battle with Cholangiocarcinoma. Jerry was born January 17, 1951 in Escanaba and was the son of Charles Lee and Eunice (Decent) Carter. Jerry graduated from Escanaba High School with the class of 1969. He then enlisted in the United States Air Force on December 2, 1969, serving as a communications specialist with the 786 Radar Squadron. He was stationed in Vietnam from 1971 to 1972. Jerry was honorably discharged on December 1, 1973. Jerry then attended Bay de Noc Community College and graduated with a degree in business. He then held several management positions in the Escanaba area before taking the District Manager position with the Detroit Free Press for 23 years retiring in 2014. He then worked for the Island Resort and Casino as a security guard. Jerry was a devoted Detroit lions, Detroit Tiger and University of Michigan fan. He enjoyed golfing, bowling, hunting and playing softball.
Jerry is survived by his wife, Lori; son, Chris (Stacie) Carter of Gladstone, Chad (Stephanie) Carter of Escanaba, Craig (Kelly) Carter of Gladstone; step son, Tom (Amber) Kang of Hopkins, MI; step daughter, Amanda (Joe) Knuth of Escanaba; 13 grandchildren, Chloe (Lew), Caydence (Trevor), Colten, Braylin, Finlee, Michael, Avery, Reagan, Sailor and Elliot Carter, Jax Knuth, Marissa and Braeden Kang; sister in laws, Mary Carter of Escanaba, Marlene Carter of Kingsford, Violet Carter of Milwaukee, WI, Sue Bushey of Escanaba, Patti (Todd) Holland of Escanaba; brother in law, Kim Bushey of Escanaba and very dear friends’ Fran, Patty and Mike Frappier.
In addition to his parents, Jerry was preceded in death by brothers Robert, Wayne and Gary Carter and mother and father-in-law Joe and Joyce Bushey.
Visitation will be held from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., Friday, September 1, 2023, at the Anderson Funeral Home in Escanaba. Military Honors will be conducted at 5:30 p.m. Friday, at the Anderson Funeral Home Chapel, by the Delta County Veteran’s Council being assisted by the U.S. Air Force. Funeral services celebrating the life of Jerry will follow the military services, with Deacon Mike LeBeau officiating. A luncheon will be served, following the funeral services, in the Ludington Room at the Anderson Funeral Home. Burial will take place in the Escanaba Township Cemetery.
