George Edward Clemens, age 87, of Cornell, MI passed away Tuesday, July 11, 2023 at U.P. Health System - Marquette. He was born July 6, 1936 in Saginaw, MI, the son of Earl and Mildred (Angevine) Clemens. George graduated from Arthur Hill High School in Saginaw in 1953. He then enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving from 1953 until he was discharged in 1957. During his time with the U.S. Army, he was stationed at Fairbanks, Alaska working in the motor pool. After his discharge from the Army, George then attended a trade school in Pennsylvania. He moved back to Saginaw and worked for Saginaw Steering Gear Plant, a division of General Motors for 35 years, retiring in 1992. George married the former Deborah Lynn Sohn on December 18, 1976 in Vassar, MI and she preceded her in death on November 21, 2002. In 1993, George and Deborah moved to Cornell and built their retirement home. George enjoyed woodworking, mowing the grass, and keeping his property up. He also loved cars and enjoyed watching auto auctions on T.V. When George would sell an automobile, everyone would want to buy his car, for he kept them in such great shape.
George Edward Clemens is survived by children, Jennifer (Scott) Altizer of Carol, MI, George Neal Clemens of Carol, MI, Christopher Clemens of Chandler, AZ, and Timothy Sohn of Cornell; two grandchildren, Nicole Altizer and Michael Clemens; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, July 18, 2023 at the Anderson Funeral Home in Gladstone. Funeral services celebrating the life of George will follow at 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, in the Anderson Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Steve Cowen officiating. Burial will take place following the services in Fernwood Cemetery with the Gladstone American Legion Post #71 conducting military rites.
