Garry E. Johnson

Garry E. Johnson, age 80, of Cornell, passed away Sunday morning, December 16, 2018 at his home. He was born on February 23, 1938 in Escanaba, the son of Earl and Hazel (Williams) Johnson. Garry grew up and attended school in Cornell. He moved to Ortonville, MI and married the former Janet Carol Allen in 1956 and she preceded him in death in 1998. Together, the couple shared 42 years of marriage and raised 4 children. Garry enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps on August 21, 1956 and served his country until he was honorably discharged on August 20, 1958. After returning home, Garry worked in gravel pits for a few years and later as a mason for many years. He and Janet moved back to the Upper Peninsula in 1972, settling in Cornell. Garry owned and operated Johnson and Sons Trucking Company for several years where he transported timber and over the road supplies. He retired in 1998. Garry married the former Beverly Kossow and she also preceded him in death. In his retirement years, Garry enjoyed fishing, hunting, and spending time with his children and grandchildren. He always had a project for the family to work on and wasn’t afraid to put them to work. Garry loved the outdoors, especially watching and feeding the birds and deer. He enjoyed sunny days on his lawn mower and cutting the grass. Garry took great pride in his lawn. He was proud to have served his country and was a member of the American Legion Post 71.

Garry E. Johnson is survived by children, Terrie Johnivin of Cornell, Garry (Ruth) Johnson of Peshtigo, WI, and Brian Johnson of Phoenix, AZ; 10 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; siblings, Dennis (Sandy) Johnson, Dale (Pat) Johnson, and Sue Harmon; as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

In addition to his parents, Garry was preceded in death by his first wife, Janet Carol Johnson; second wife, Beverly Johnson; and daughter, Janet Carol Allgeyer.

Visitation will be held from 2:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., Saturday, December 22, 2018 at the Anderson Funeral Home in Escanaba. Military Honors will be conducted at 3:45 p.m. in the Anderson Funeral Home Chapel by the Delta County Veterans Council. Funeral services celebrating the life of Garry will follow at 4:00 p.m., Saturday, in the Anderson Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Tom Otis of First Lutheran Church in Gladstone officiating.
