Elvera E. Kallio, age 103, of Grand Haven, MI (formerly of Gladstone), passed away Wednesday, October 19, 2022 at Lakeshore Assisted Living in Grand Haven, MI. She was born on January 26, 1919 in Kipling, the daughter of Matt and Elizabeth (Sutki) Maki. Elvera was raised in Kipling and attended school at the Kipling Schoolhouse. When she was 19, she moved to Chicago, IL and worked as a waitress and also was employed by Little Fuse Company. It was during this time, she met her future husband, Lawrence Kallio, and the couple were wed on May 25, 1040 in Iowa. Elvera and Larry moved to Grand Marais, MI where they lived for a short time before settling in Gladstone. She worked for Mattson’s Furniture Company in Gladstone for a few years before her 23-year employment with Eaton Corporation, retiring in 1982. Elvera loved bowling and was part of the Bowling League in Gladstone for many years. Also, during retirement, she looked forward to walking 1-5 miles every day with her sister-in-law who lived in the same neighborhood as her. Elvera was a longtime, dedicated member of First Lutheran Church in Gladstone. Elvera lived in Grand Haven with her son and daughter-in-law for six years before moving into Lakeshore Assisted Living in August of 2022.
Elvera is survived by son, Larry (Mary) Kallio of Grand Haven, MI; grandchildren, Larry (Sarah) and Cheryl (Henry); great-grandchildren, Lexie, Ella, Lando, Lukus, and Sophia; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Elvera was preceded in death by her parents, Matt and Elizabeth; husband, Lawrence; daughter, Cheryl; and 14 of her brothers and sisters.
Visitation will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., Thursday, October 27, 2022 at First Lutheran Church in Gladstone. Funeral services celebrating the life of Elvera will follow at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, with Rev. Elisabeth Daniels officiating. A luncheon will be served at the conclusion of the services in the church fellowship hall. Burial will take place in Fernwood Cemetery.
