Duane L. Desautel, age 93, of Grand Marais, Michigan, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 23, 2026, at Schoolcraft Medical Care Facility in Manistique, Michigan.
Duane was born on January 17, 1933, in Manistique, Michigan, to Henry and Atholia (Lundberg) Desautel. He graduated from Manistique High School with the Class of 1951 before proudly serving his country in the United States Air Force, where he worked in cable telecommunications for the military.
Following his service, Duane worked for Motorola, helping install telephone lines along the Alaskan Pipeline so workers could stay connected with their families back home. After retiring in 1974, he returned to the peace and beauty of Grand Marais, a place he dearly loved. Duane treasured his privacy and embraced a simple, off-the-grid lifestyle surrounded by nature at its purest.
A man of deep faith, Duane read his Bible daily and was a devoted member of the Apostolic Faith. He loved music and singing and bringing smiles to those around him. He also enjoyed traveling and experienced many parts of the world throughout his life.
Duane was known for his patriotic spirit, quiet strength, and memorable sayings; especially his favorite: “Apple seeds don’t come true.”
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Duane will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew him. In keeping with his wishes, no service will be held.
