Douglas Reese Obituary

Husband, father, and grandfather, Douglas C. Reese entered fully into the presence of the Lord on Friday, August 12, 2022. He was 65.

Born December 29, 1956 to Joseph Reese and Caroline (Kroll) Reese, both originally from Escanaba, Doug grew up in Geneva, Illinois.  An outstanding athlete in football, wrestling, and baseball, Doug forged many lifetime friendships with his teammates, coaches, and classmates. He is a member of the Geneva High School Athletic Hall of Fame.

Doug graduated from Northern Michigan University before beginning his career as a football and wrestling coach on the high school, collegiate, and international stage. Working with USA Wrestling, Doug coached teams at the Pan Am Games and at several World Championships. He was instrumental in establishing women’s wrestling at the collegiate level. He, himself, earned a silver medal at the wrestling Senior World Championships in 1993. As a coach, he impacted many young people.

Doug’s Christian faith was an essential part of his life. From an early age he was involved in Fellowship of Christian Athletes, attending many FCA camps as both a participant and as a coach and presenter.  He led many mission trips around the world through Athletes in Action. As a published author, Doug shared his love of the Lord and of athletics in his book To the Next Level.

Doug loved the UP, where he enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and just being outdoors.

Doug is survived by his wife of 43 years, Rosanne; and three children, Matthew (Theresa) Reese, Christian (Caitlyn) Reese, and Reilly (Drew) Tetik. He dearly loved his four grandchildren, Izabella Reilly, Conor Leonard, Crystal Autumn, and Couper Paul. Doug also leaves behind his brother, David; sister, Debbie (Russ) Bishop; cherished aunt and uncle, Gary and Cathy Reese; and many beloved family and friends.

Immediate family will be honoring Doug’s wishes in a private ceremony. Donations in his memory may be made to the Geneva High School Athletic Department, 416 McKinley Ave., Geneva, IL 60134.

Though he will be sorely missed, Doug’s family will take comfort from one of his favorite Bible quotes: “Death is swallowed up in victory.”
