Donna Jean Maxwell, age 80, of Manistique, Michigan, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 18, 2026, at Schoolcraft Medical Care Facility, surrounded by the thoughts and love of those who cared for her. She was born on July 27, 1945, in Manistique to Alden and Opal (McCarney) McLear.
Donna was a hardworking woman who spent many years serving others as a bartender at Jax, Golden Girls, The Hub, Jackpine, and the casino, and she was never afraid to roll up her sleeves—also working as a prep cook and doing dishes when needed. Anyone who knew Donna knew she had a strong work ethic and an even stronger spirit.
Above all else, Donna loved being with her family and friends, and she especially treasured time spent with her special friend, Hank. She enjoyed bowling, playing card games, Yahtzee, and “dog house,” and she never turned down a trip to the casino. Laughter, friendly competition, and good company were some of her favorite things in life.
Donna is survived by her three children: Jamie (Paul) Maxwell, Donna (Dave) Maxwell, and Jim (Heather) Maxwell; her five grandchildren: Erin (Matt) Deal, Megan (Jason) Knoeckert, Adam (Angie) Jewett, Conrad (Renee) Jewett, and Ryan (Megan) Ulbricht; and her eight great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sisters, Judy Johnson and Toni Brow along with many beloved nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her sisters, Barbara Ackley, Mildred “Midge” Gould, and Janice McKenzie; and her brothers, James “Magoo” and Joe McLear.
Donna will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew her.
A celebration of Donna’s life will be held at a later date.
