Connie Brooks Obituary

Connie Brooks, age 60, of Rapid River, passed away Tuesday morning, April 7, 2020 at UP Health System - Marquette. She was born and raised in Chicago, IL, and was the product of the Chicago Public Schools. She graduated from Kelvyn Park High School, Chicago in 1976 and traveled widely in her career before settling in Gladstone, MI where she and her partner ran a successful bait and tackle shop for 21 years. Connie was a great businesswoman and always treated people fairly. She had a caring heart and would always look for ways to help others in need. She enjoyed watching the wildlife on the Whitefish River, feeding the deer, and spoiling everyone’s dogs and cats. She was an avid outdoorswoman that loved to hunt and fish and learned a lot about bait and tackle during the many years at the bait shop. Considering she was a “city girl” her breadth of knowledge was impressive. She was well-liked by the many local and professional fishermen that would visit the bait and tackle shop. Even though she loved the solitude and quiet of Michigan, she was always a proud Chicagoan and loved her “Cubbies” and Chicago Bears. Connie will be remembered as a person who lived her faith by loving her neighbor.

Connie is survived by her partner of 40 years, Naomi Johnson; mother, Edna Brooks; three sisters, Verna Keller, Terri Brooks, and Susan Kelley (Wally); eight nieces and nephews; two grandnieces; one grandnephew; and dear friend, Jahne Hupy. Connie is also survived by her partner’s family, Jan Leksich, and Daren Johnson.

She was preceded in death by her father, Carlie Brooks.

Graveside services celebrating the life of Connie will be held at 12:00 p.m., Sunday, July 26, 2020 at Lakewood Cemetery in Stonington with Rev. Diane Srutowski officiating. A luncheon will be served at the conclusion of the services at the Stonington Community Hall. Condolences can be mailed to PO Box 203, Rapid River, MI 49878.
