Clara Mosenfelder Obituary

Local Escanaba artist Clara Mosenfelder has died at the age of 98.  She was preceded in death by her husband Robert A. Mosenfelder, her parents Ralph K. Watkins and Clara Lois Lhamon Watkins of Missouri, and sisters Ruth Baechle and Julia Hanan.  Clara is survived by her son Robert I. Mosenfelder, daughter Clara Margaret Scarry, son James Mosenfelder and son William Mosenfelder. Additionally, Clara leaves four grandchildren; Russ Mosenfelder, Mina Mosenfelder, Joy Mosenfelder and Clara J Scarry, and one great granddaughter Clara Frances, the sixth consecutive Clara in the maternal line.

Clara had a long history of community service.  Among her notable roles were founding president of the local League of Women Voters, president of the Escanaba Area School Board, and president of the Delta County Historical Society. She was instrumental in restoring the Sand Point Lighthouse by writing successful grant proposals to fund the project.

Clara earned an Associate of Arts from Stephens College and a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri.  She taught art to kindergarten through high school at Bark River Harris School and at Bay de Noc Community College.

The Mosenfelder family is thankful to Clara’s friends for enriching her life and recommends donations go to the Delta County Historical Society from those choosing to honor her memory.
