Alicemae Laakso Obituary

Alicemae Laakso, 89, passed away Thursday morning, September 24, 2020 at Lakeview Assisted Living in Gladstone. She was born Alicemae Davidson in Escanaba on July 19, 1931, to James and Esther Davidson. She graduated from Escanaba High School in 1949, and from Northern Michigan University in 1953. It was in Marquette that she met her future husband, David Laakso, whom she married in 1953. She taught in Marquette for a year, until they moved to Merrill, MI in 1954. They were both teachers there for five years, until their move to Escanaba in 1959, and Alicemae remained in the teaching profession until her retirement in 1988.

She was a long-time member and former chapter president of P.E.O. Chapter Z, and a board member of the Delta County Historical Society, where she was in charge of membership rolls and the winter lecture series. Alicemae was also an active member of the First United Presbyterian Church, and a volunteer at the Salvation Army.

Alicemae is survived by her daughter, Susan Curran, of Englewood, FL; son, William (Jeanne) Laakso, of Green Bay, W; as well as four grandchildren, Olivia Macaulay and Graham Curran, Maria Laakso and Samuel Laakso; and one great-granddaughter, Sloane Macaulay.

She was preceded in death by her husband, David, in 2014.
