Alice Roberts Obituary

Alice M. Roberts, age 93, of Gladstone, passed away Tuesday, November 10, 2020 at Christian Park Healthcare Center in Escanaba. She was born on December 22, 1926 in Escanaba, the daughter of Frank and Mary (LaCross) VanEffen. Alice was raised and attended school in Escanaba and was a 1943 graduate of Escanaba High School. Following graduation, she worked at a defense factory during WWII in Milwaukee making parachutes. The former Alice VanEffen married Fred Roberts on January 18, 1947 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Escanaba and he preceded her in death on May 8, 1993. Together, the couple shared 46 years of marriage and raised 7 children. Alice was employed for many years at the Petersen Grocery Store in Flat Rock. She volunteered as a 4-H leader, taught sewing, and worked at the local voting polls. She greatly enjoyed sewing and making Halloween costumes for kids, and was an avid Green Bay Packers fan. Alice loved games, especially Scrabble, and enjoyed watching game shows on television. She also liked to read until her sight declined. Alice was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend who will be deeply missed.

Alice M. Roberts is survived by her sons, Ken (Marcy) Roberts of Mass City, MI, Butch (Janice) Roberts of Gladstone, and Tom (Mickie) Roberts of Gladstone; daughters, Diane (Karl) Hess of Gladstone, Cheryl Wendrick of Gladstone, Nancy (Marvin) Levesque of Escanaba, and Lisa (John) Trotter of Gladstone; 19 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandchild; brother, Larry (Sheila) VanEffen; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, Fred, Alice was preceded in death by her stepdad, Art Beaudoin; granddaughter, Heather Hess; son-in-law, Russ Wendrick; brothers, Bob (Dorothy) VanEffen, Roy (Tillie) VanEffen, Fritz (Lorraine) VanEffen, and Orville VanEffen; and sisters, Dorothy (Arvy) Johnson, Shirley (Curly) DeGrand, Gladys (Blash) Wolf, and Carol (Sherman) Blake.

Private family visitation and funeral services will be held at the Anderson Funeral Home in Escanaba with Rev. Dave Grant officiating. Burial will take place in the Escanaba Township Cemetery in Flat Rock.
