Shirley Marie Sanborn, age 86, of Zellwood, FL (formerly of Gladstone), passed away Wednesday, October 10, 2018 at Florida Hospital – Altamonte. She was born on November 18, 1931 in Detroit, MI, the daughter of Jerry and Vernita (Foster) Vivoda. Shirley grew up and graduated from high school in 1949 in Detroit. At the young age of 17, she was employed as an operator for Michigan Bell. She also worked for a nursing home in Detroit for a few years. In October of 1953, the former Shirley Vivoda married Edward Earl Sanborn, Sr. in Detroit. Together, they shared many years of marriage and raised 5 children. The family relocated to the Upper Peninsula in Gladstone in 1978 due to Ed’s job transfer with UPS. Shirley took pride in being a homemaker and caring for her children. In their later years, Shirley and Ed enjoyed being snowbirds and wintering in Florida. After Ed passed away, Shirley moved to Florida and lived there full time. She loved playing bingo, playing and organizing card games, being a grandmother, and spending time with her family and friends. She was a member of First Lutheran Church in Gladstone.
Shirley Sanborn is survived by 5 children, Edward, Jr., Cheryl, Deborah, Raymond, and Cynthia; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; 1 brother, Robert Vivoda; 1 stepsister; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, Shirley was preceded in death by 1 sister, Charlene; and 1 brother, Sherwood.
Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., Monday, October 22, 2018 at the Anderson Funeral Home in Escanaba. Funeral services celebrating the life of Shirley will follow at 11:00 a.m., Monday, in the Anderson Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Tom Otis of First Lutheran Church officiating. Entombment will take place in the Gardens of Rest Mausoleum.
