Richard J. King, age 81, of Flat Rock, passed away Saturday, February 17, 2018 at his home surrounded by family. He was born on June 28, 1936 in Escanaba, the son of George and Agnes (Chenier) King. Richard grew up in Flat Rock, attended Carrol’s Corner School as a child, and graduated from Escanaba High School in 1955. At the young age of 17, Richard was employed by Northern Motors in the parts department for 40 years until his retirement in 1993. Richard married the former Mary Verbrigghe. Together, they raised three children together and she preceded him in death. On August 5, 1994, Richard married Julie Iery in Marquette and she preceded him in death on August 6, 2014. He enjoyed life and lived it to its fullest. Richard loved the outdoors and spending time at his Camp Chili since 1953.
Richard J. King is survived by three sons, Dale (Geraldine Erickson) King of Flat Rock, James (Rita Wildey) King of Flat Rock, and Kevin (Pam) King of Riverland; step-daughters, Laurie (Andrew) Iery-Kassman of Tucson, AZ, and Kelly (Don) Iery-DeBaere of Gwinn, MI; grandchildren, Kristin King, Nicholas King, Kent King, Shannon King, Christina King, Dalton Wildey, Dylan Kassman, Stephanie Hahn, and Joshua LaBelle; great-granddaughter, Kenzie Zimmerman; brothers, Lawrence King, and John (Phyllis) King; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and wife, Richard was preceded in death by sisters, Rose (Charles) Wheatley, Lorraine (John) Froberg, and Dorothy (Patrick) Lafave; and brothers, Henry (Anna Mae) King, Francis (Rosalie) King, Donald King, and Robert King.
Visitation will be held from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., Thursday, February 22, 2018 at the Anderson Funeral Home in Escanaba. Funeral services celebrating the life of Richard will follow at 3:30 p.m., Thursday, in the Anderson Funeral Home Chapel with Father Francis Dobrzenski officiating. Burial will take place in Gardens of Rest Cemetery.
