Neil V. Gerber, age 64, of Gladstone, passed away Tuesday evening, May 22, 2018 at St. Mary's Hospital – Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN with family and friends at his bedside. He was born November 20, 1953 in Jackson, MI, the son of Albert and Theresa Gillis Gerber. Neil graduated from Gladstone High School in 1972. During his high school years, he attained the rank of Eagle Scout and was the starting center on the Gladstone Hall of Fame football team. Neil served in the U.S. Navy from 1973-1979, touring the Mediterranean Sea aboard the USS Roosevelt. In 1985 he graduated from Central Michigan University with a degree in education. He was passionate about teaching middle school in the Gladstone School District until he retired in 2015.
Neil embraced the outdoors, spending time at camp, "bobbin" in the lake, deer hunting, Hay Days in Minnesota, and snowmobiling. He was also a strong advocate, serving as the Teacher’s Union Representative, President of the Shakey Lakes Association, and Secretary for the Rapid River Relic Riders. Neil loved his cats.
Neil V. Gerber is survived by his wife, Brenda Gerber of Escanaba; stepson, Steve Seaburg of Escanaba; father, Albert Gerber of Menominee, MI; brother, Don Gerber of St. Peter, MN; sister, Marie (Joseph) Joran of Apple Valley, MN; nephews, Paul Joran of Kansas City, MO, and John (Shannon) Joran of Edina, MN; and many cousins and close friends.
Neil was preceded in death by his mother, Theresa; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., Saturday, May 26, 2017 at the Anderson Funeral Home in Escanaba. Military Honors will be conducted at 3:00 p.m., Saturday, in the Anderson Funeral Home Chapel by the Delta County Veterans Council and the U.S. Navy Honor Guard. A luncheon will be served afterward in the Harbor Tower reception room in Escanaba. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be directed to the Delta Animal Shelter.
