Herman Kay Obituary

Herman R. Kay, age 90, of Stonington, passed away Monday, February 26, 2018 at the Oscar G. Johnson VA Medical Center in Iron Mountain. He was born on December 5, 1927 in Escanaba, the son of Albert and Alma (Lindbuck) Kay. Herman grew up in Stonington where he also attended school. He was drafted into the U.S. Army on November 23, 1951 and served during the Korean War until his honorable discharge on April 16, 1953. Herman married the former Viola Johns on January 16, 1952 at the Delta County Courthouse in Escanaba. Together, they shared 66 years of marriage and raised two children. Herman sailed on the Great Lakes as a fireman for various companies for 43 years. He began his lifelong career working for the Columbia Company and then was employed by the Hanna Mining Company for over 20 years until his retirement. Herman loved anything to do with the outdoors, especially fishing, hunting, working in the woods, and ice fishing in the wintertime. Family meant the world to Herman. He loved family get togethers throughout the year and especially during the holidays. He was a member of the Rapid River American Legion Post 301 and Trinity Lutheran Church of Stonington.

Herman R. Kay is survived by wife, Viola Kay of Stonington; children, Catherine Fletcher (Tom Harteau) of Felch, and Terry (Brenda) Kay of Schaffer; 5 grandchildren, Cheryl, Scott, Melissa, Lance, and Dustin; 10 great-grandchildren; nephews, Clarence (Esther) Cadreau, and Calvin Cadreau; and niece, Carol Cadreau.

In addition to his parents, Herman was preceded in death by 2 brothers, George and John Kay; and sister, Norma Kay.

Graveside memorial services will be held in the spring of the year at Lakewood Cemetery in Stonington with Pastor Diane Srutowski officiating. Military Honors will also be conducted by the Rapid River American Legion.
