Gene M. Jones, age 94, of 1504 South 13th St. in Escanaba, passed away Friday morning, June 23, 2017 at Bishop Noa Home in Escanaba. He was born on August 2, 1922 in Escanaba, the son of John and Anna (Lippold) Jones. Gene grew up in Escanaba and was a member of the 1940 Escanaba High School graduating class. Following graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II until he was honorably discharged on June 22, 1943. After returning home, Gene worked for Household Electric and later at Sears and Roebuck as a repairman and then into sales. For many years, Gene was the top salesman in the Midwest region for Sears. He retired from Sears and Roebuck in 1985. Gene married the former Alice Mattson on October 16, 1948 at Bethany Lutheran Church in Escanaba. Together, the couple shared 68 years of marriage. Gene was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church in Escanaba, life member of the DAV, life member of the Amvets, golden member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, and a 75-consecutive year member with the Escanaba American Legion. He enjoyed fishing, camping, bowling, gardening, and anything to do with the outdoors.
Gene M. Jones is survived by wife of 68 years, Alice Jones; sons, Thomas Jones (Joy Sedlock) of Napa, CA; Sue (Harry) Erickson of Marquette; and John (Cynthia) Sherman Jones of Limestone, MI; 5 grandchildren, Andy (Jenny) Erickson, Jenny (Gordon) Erickson, Adriane (Chris) Steinberg; Teresa (Jonathon) Sherman Jones; and Nicholas Sherman Jones; 6 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Gene was preceded in death by brother, Bob; and sister, Hazel.
Visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., Tuesday, June 27, 2017 at the Anderson Funeral Home in Escanaba. Military Honors will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. in the Anderson Funeral Home Chapel by the Delta County Veterans Council. Funeral services celebrating the life of Gene M. Jones will be at 4:00 p.m., Tuesday, at Bethany Lutheran Church in Escanaba. Burial will take place in Lakeview Cemetery.
