Charlotte Rohring Obituary

Charlotte “Char” L. Rohring, age 89, of Gladstone, formerly of Manistique, MI, passed away Thursday afternoon, April 12, 2018 at Lakeview Assisted Living in Gladstone. She was born on May 13, 1928 in Benton Harbor, MI, the daughter of Arthur and Henrietta (Winegarden) Adler. Char grew up in Benton Harbor and graduated from Benton Harbor High School in 1946. In the fall, she went on to attend Western Michigan University. In 1948, she transferred to Michigan State University and graduated with a BA in Journalism in 1950. Following graduation, Char joined the Evening Sentinel in Holland, MI. On June 28, 1953, the former Charlotte Adler married William in Benton Harbor, MI and he preceded her in death on October 10, 2016. Together, the couple shared 63 years of marriage. Bill and Char lived on Lawson Air Force Base in Fort Benning, GA while he served in the military. They moved back to Benton Harbor where Bill owned and operated Rohring’s Clothing Store as Char was able to stay home and raise their 3 children. At age 36, when the children were older, Char when on to receive her Master’s Degree in Education from Michigan State University. She had a passion for teaching gifted students and was employed for Benton Harbor Area Schools for 20 years. Char and Bill relocated to Putnam County, FL where she taught gifted students at two schools in Crescent City as well as East Palatka Elementary. The couple were snowbirds for 18 years, spending half of the year in Manistique, MI, and the other half in Putnam County, FL. In her retirement years, she was able to pursue her life-long interests in writing, watercolor painting, teaching reading to adults in Putnam County, attending Elderhostels, and keeping up with her children, grandchildren, and former students. Char was proud of her family and loved the life she had lived.

Charlotte L. Rohring is survived by sons, William, Jr. (Donna) Rohring of Manistique, and Daniel (Twila) Rohring of Norman, OK; daughter, Rebecca (Thomas) Andrew of Contoocook, NH; 9 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, Char was preceded in death by her sister, Kassy Adler Hamilton; and brother, Garrell Adler.

Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, June 12, 2018 at the First United Methodist Church in Manistique, MI. Funeral services celebrating the life of Charlotte will follow at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Donald Bedwell officiating. A luncheon will be served afterward in the church fellowship hall.
